When Calyx Peak Companies set out to grow its cannabis operations across multiple states, it treated technology as the foundation, not an afterthought. Known for brands like Smackers and Pinchy's and its flagship cultivation facility in Missouri, Calyx turned to Netverta to design the infrastructure underneath its expansion. What began as a small advisory role is now a multi-year partnership shaping the operational backbone of the business.
A mutual industry executive made the introduction, a small world as Netverta Managing Partner Mike Cote puts it. The first engagement was modest: advise on technology and get the house in order, with scalability built in from the start. But Calyx wasn't shopping for a contractor. It needed a partner who could help it enter new markets without rebuilding from zero each time.
"It was made very clear that the owners wanted a solutions partner, not just a technology vendor," said Cote. Instead of quoting a project and walking away, Netverta built toward Calyx's expansion plans rather than a single install.
The clearest example is Calyx Peak's 82,000-square-foot cultivation and extraction facility in Smithville, Missouri. Netverta was embedded during the blueprinting phase, before the walls went up, so the technology and the building came together as one system rather than a retrofit.
"Think of it like building a home," said Cote. "If the foundation is poorly constructed, the entire house suffers. We ensured the technology foundation could support rapid expansion without structural stress." That foundation now carries a fully connected grow operation: environmental controls, irrigation, and lighting cycles run through a centralized system, wireless coverage reaches every corner, and AI-assisted monitoring watches plant health and security anomalies alike. Netverta's decades of retail technology and build-out work carried directly into the cannabis space.
In cannabis, infrastructure and compliance are the same conversation. Point-of-sale and surveillance are only the surface; underneath sit security controls and redundancy built to withstand whatever a regulator or market shift demands. Netverta's work spans seed-to-sale tracking, redundant network failover, and video surveillance that stores terabytes of footage against each state's retention rules. Even fleet vehicles moving product carry their own compliance obligations.
The security layer keeps advancing. Netverta is integrating AI-based video analytics with 3D image recognition to flag anomalies, loitering, and unauthorized access in real time. "Enhanced cybersecurity is becoming the new standard," said Cote, pointing to the threat intelligence feeds, behavioral analysis, automated patching, and multi-factor authentication the team now deploys across client systems.
The payoff shows up in how quickly Calyx can enter a new market. It has expanded from California to Missouri and Massachusetts, each with its own regulatory rulebook, on one standardized yet adaptable stack. Netverta built on cloud-based cannabis platforms with customizable workflows and built-in compliance updates, so the system adjusts as state laws change instead of forcing a rebuild.
"Because Netverta helped us build a scalable, compliant system from day one, we're able to expand without rethinking everything every time we enter a new state," said Howard Keum, CEO of Calyx Peak. "That kind of foresight saves time, money, and a lot of headaches."
The infrastructure is the groundwork, but the data moving through it sharpens Calyx's decisions on distribution and branding. "With inventory and seed-to-sale systems integrated across states, we're able to spot trends in real time," said Keum. "We can shift supply to meet demand, fine-tune our retail experience, and make informed decisions about our in-house brands." That visibility drives how Calyx runs Smackers and Pinchy's across the 150-plus dispensaries served by its Missouri hub.
Netverta continues to build, piloting AI-driven features and deeper ties into security, CRM, and direct-to-consumer tools. For Calyx, the near-term value is sharper customer insight. "Customer analytics help us understand who's buying what, where, and why," said Keum. "That kind of insight is invaluable when building consumer loyalty in a crowded market."
What began as a behind-the-scenes advisory role has become a cornerstone of how Calyx Peak operates, and grows.
